Eating Outside
One of the first things I do when planning an adventure is plan out the meals. Food is important to me so I want to make sure I am eating well while I am out camping. Depending on the type of camping I am doing is going to set limits to what I can cook. If I am doing an extra light backpacking trip, I am not going to be bringing a dutch oven with me to cook a cake in.
When I am out camping I am typically not a big breakfast eater. I am normally just grab something quick to eat so I can get out and explore. So I will have oatmeal, granola, or a piece of fruit for breakfast. If I am feeling crazy I will fix myself eggs, potatoes, and bacon. Wrap all that up and make a breakfast burrito. But what is super important about breakfast is that I have to have a cup of coffee in the morning. It can be 100 degree already in the morning and I will still have to have a hot cup of coffee. The two ways that I make my coffee when camping is either with a French press or a percolator. It feels like these are the easiest because there isn’t much clean up to be done once the coffee is brewed.
I am a light lunch kind of guy. I feel like if I eat too much in the middle of the day I am going to have to take a nap. I don’t like napping when I am out camping because I have this fear that I am going to miss out of something cool while I am sleeping. I will make PB and J, ramen noodles, or a basic ham sandwich. I might throw in a Clif bar or a bag of mixed nuts to hold me over with some snacks too.
I think the most important meal of the day when you are camping has to be the dinner. When I plan out my meals I like to go all out for dinners. I will spend hours surfing the internet for the perfect meal. I like to cook soups, hobo packets, campfire pizza, chili, or anything that will make a mess and I have to spend forever cleaning it up. I always want a big meal at the end of the day because it will make me tired and I will sleep easier. Another reason if I have a warm meal it will keep me warm on those cold nights. Most of the time I will either cook my meals on my Coleman stove or if it just required hot water I will just use my Jetboil.
Now some of you might be asking what about dessert. 90% of the time I don’t fix dessert. After eating and cleaning up I don’t feeling like fixing anything else. When I do fix dessert I will make a cake in my dutch oven, popcorn/kettle corn, or the wildly famous s’mores. Something simple that doesn’t take long to make and easy to clean up is always the best choice for dessert in my opinion.
